Helping children with celiac disease meet the dietary fiber challenge

dietary fiber challenge

May 27, 2015

Awareness of celiac disease is at an all-time high. As awareness grows, concerned parents want to help their children avoid the nutritional deficiencies that may result from a gluten-free diet. Sunfiber, which is 100 percent gluten-free, is helping these families meet the dietary fiber challenge.

If the typical American adult finds it difficult to meet their daily dietary fiber requirements, imagine how challenging it can be for children who are following a gluten-free diet. Many gluten-free breads and baked goods are low in fiber.

Children who might be at a higher risk for celiac disease
Mommy bloggers and healthcare websites reported results of an Italian study last year. Researchers determined that children who were diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome were at a significantly higher risk of developing celiac disease. Children may also be at an increased risk for celiac disease if they have a relative with this condition.

Why there’s a dietary fiber challenge
The 2015 American Dietary Guidelines caution that we still don’t get enough fiber in our diets. Despite their smaller appetites, children need almost as much daily dietary fiber (19 to 38 grams) as adults (25 to 38 grams).

  • Children 1 to 3 years: 19 grams fiber per day
  • Children 4 to 8 years: 24 grams fiber per day
  • Girls 9 to 18 years: 26 grams fiber per day
  • Boys 9 to 13 years: 31 grams fiber per day
  • Boys 14 to 18 years: 38 grams fiber per day

According to current regulations, some well-known, over-the-counter fibers can claim they are gluten-free even if they contain up to 20 ppm of gluten. Trace amounts can add up over time. If your child is sensitive to gluten, do some research. Sunfiber is 100 percent gluten-free.

Even finicky eaters won’t mind Sunfiber, which has six grams of soluble fiber per scoop. That’s because Sunfiber disappears completely in food and beverages, without changing the taste, aroma or consistency. It can easily be used in baking and cooking. And because it’s also a prebiotic, Sunfiber helps support good gut health.
